Getting Started

How do I upload my bank statement?

Click the "Upload Data" button in the dashboard, then select your Excel (.xlsx, .xls) or CSV file. SmartSpender will automatically detect the format and import your transactions.

What file formats are supported?

SmartSpender supports:

  • Excel files (.xlsx, .xls) from major banks
  • CSV files with Date, Description, and Amount columns
  • Statements from American Express, Chase, Citi, Capital One, and more

How do I ask questions about my finances?

Use the chat interface to ask questions in plain English. Examples:

"Am I spending too much on dining?"
"What am I spending the most on?"
"Show me my biggest transactions"
"Help me save for a $300,000 home"

How does transaction categorization work?

SmartSpender automatically categorizes transactions into 8 categories (Dining, Groceries, Transportation, Entertainment, Shopping, Utilities, Healthcare, Other) using merchant pattern matching. The system recognizes 100+ common merchants and learns from transaction descriptions.

How are budgets calculated?

When you upload your first statement, SmartSpender creates automatic budgets based on your actual spending, set at 120% of your current spending to give you flexibility. You can adjust these budgets at any time.

Is my financial data secure?

Yes. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We use enterprise-grade AWS infrastructure with strict access controls. Your data is never shared with third parties for marketing purposes.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. You can delete individual transactions or request complete account deletion by contacting support. We will permanently remove all your data within 30 days of your request.

Why are some transactions categorized as "Other"?

Transactions that don't match known merchant patterns are categorized as "Other." This often includes business expenses, transfers, or merchants with unusual description formats. The AI assistant can still analyze these transactions based on their amounts and descriptions.

How often is my data updated?

Your data is updated in real-time as you upload new statements. The dashboard and analytics reflect your current data immediately after upload.

Is SmartSpender free to use?

Yes, SmartSpender is free to use with all core features available at no cost.
